Ganoderma applanatum

Ganoderma applanatum is a species of fungi that grows horizontally like a shelf from the trunk of a tree.  It feeds off the tree, killing it and contributing to wood rot.  This specimen shows the history of the tree.  It began growing horizontally while the tree was vertical.  When the tree weakened sufficiently to tip over the fungi continued to grow horizontally in the tree's new orientation.
